Appareil portatif servant à amplifier les sons, utilisé notamment dans la marine comme porte-voix. Cette «sale bête» que le commissaire du bord qualifiait ainsi en m'invectivant dans son mégaphone était un magnifique fourmilier (CENDRARS, Lotiss. ciel, 1949, p.11). Faut-il un mégaphone pour vous atteindre? (ARNOUX, Double chance, 1958, p.79).

Empr. à l'anglo-amér. megaphone, du gr. - «grand» (cf. fr. méga-) et «son» (cf. fr. -phone), désignant un appareil d'amplification et de transmission des sons inventé par Edison (1878 ds NED) puis, plus gén., un instrument d'amplification de la voix (1896, ibid.).
